A tragic accident on the Kumasi–Accra highway has claimed three lives and left two others injured following a collision involving three heavy-duty trucks in the early hours of Monday, May 12, 2025.
The incident occurred near Akyem Asafo in the Eastern Region.
The crash involved a broken-down DAF trailer loaded with cocoa, a Scania truck, and a Howo tipper truck. Eyewitnesses reported that the DAF trailer, registered as 6294-11, had stalled and was left stationary in the middle of the road without adequate warning to oncoming traffic.
As the Scania truck, with registration number GS 6429-11, and an unregistered Howo tipper truck approached the scene, both collided with the immobile trailer. The force of the impact killed the Scania driver and two female passengers instantly. The victims are believed to have been traders traveling to the capital.
Emergency personnel from the Bunso Command of the Ghana National Fire Service, Suhum Police MTTD, and the National Ambulance Service arrived at the scene shortly after the incident. The deceased were taken to the Suhum Government Hospital morgue, while the two injured victims are currently receiving medical care at the same facility.
Authorities from the Ghana Police Service have launched an investigation to determine the precise cause of the crash. They are also assessing whether proper safety measures—such as warning signage or reflective devices—were in place to alert drivers to the presence of the stalled vehicle.
