President John Dramani Mahama has extended warm Mother's Day wishes to Ghana’s Vice President, Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, as she recovers from a recent illness.
In a message shared on Sunday, May 11, Mr. Mahama revealed that he had visited the Vice President earlier in the day, expressing joy at her recovery and praising her strength and dedication.
"A special Mother's Day greeting to my Vice President, Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, whom I had the pleasure of visiting earlier this morning," he wrote. "She is taking a deserved rest after recovering from illness and looking forward to resuming her duties soon."
Though details of her illness have not been made public, sources close to the Office of the Vice President confirm that Prof. Opoku-Agyemang had taken time off her official duties in recent weeks to focus on her health. Her absence from several high-profile public events had sparked speculation, but Sunday’s update from Mr. Mahama offered reassurance of her recovery and readiness to return to work.
The President also extended his wishes to all mothers across the country, recognizing their sacrifices and indispensable role in society. “To her and all Ghanaian mothers, I say Happy Mother’s Day,” he added.
Professor Opoku-Agyemang, who made history as Ghana's first female Vice President, has been widely admired for her calm leadership style, commitment to education, and strong advocacy for women's empowerment. Her return to active service is expected to reinvigorate ongoing national conversations around education reform and social development, which she has championed since taking office.
