Attorney General and Minister for Justice, Dr. Dominic Ayine, has dared Gomoa Central Member of Parliament, Kwame Asare Obeng, popularly known as A-Plus, to provide evidence to back his claim that he has engaged in corruption or bribery.
This comes after A-Plus took to social media to accuse Dr. Ayine of corruption and complicity in a controversial sanitation levy deal, which he claimed was manipulated to favour certain individuals close to the Attorney General.
“I have never stolen before in my life and have never received a bribe in public office. All those who have dealt with me know this for a fact,” Dr. Ayine said at a press briefing in Accra on Wednesday.
He insisted that the allegations were “palpable falsehoods,” adding that he was not a member of Parliament’s Finance Committee when the sanitation levy was passed and, therefore, could not have influenced its composition or direction.
“The President would not have appointed me Attorney General if he had questions about my personal integrity,” he stressed.
Reaffirming his commitment to accountability, Dr. Ayine said: “If you have evidence against me, bring it out. I have sufficient reserves of integrity to do this job.”
The AG used the occasion to give an update on several high-profile corruption investigations under his watch, including the prosecution of former National Signals Bureau (NSB) Director-General, Kwabena Adu Boahene, and his wife, Angela Adjei Boateng, for allegedly stealing over GH¢49 million from state coffers.
The Attorney General further confirmed that charges have been filed against the former NSB Director-General, his wife and one other person for various offences.
“They took advantage of a contract intended for a government agency and diverted payments into their own company’s accounts. We have filed charges including stealing, money laundering, conspiracy, and causing financial loss to the state,” he stated.
