The Communication for Development and Advocacy Consult (CDA CONSULT) supports the Ghana Investment Fund for Electronic Communications (GIFEC), new agenda to leveraging Information, Communication, and Technology (ICT) to address Ghana’s underdevelopment and empower its citizens.
In a statement signed by Mr Francis Ameyibor, CDA Consult Executive Director and copied to the media on Wednesday acknowledged Dr. Sofo Tanko Rashid Computer, GIFEC Administrator and Chief Executive Officer for his passion to bridge the digital divide.
CDA Consult statement noted that Dr Rashid Computer has stepped into the shoes of Honourable Kofi Attor, who served in that capacity for seven years and undertook a total transformation of GIFEC and to ensure that the benefits of electronic communication reached underserved communities.
“We applaud Dr. Rashid Computer for placing emphasis on the importance of digital literacy and the revamping of Community Information Centers (CICs) to serve as hubs for teaching basic Information and Technology skills,” CDA Consult stated.
Dr Rashid Computer’s agenda for the transformation of GIFEC includes empowering individuals to utilise electronic devices, equipping Ghanaians with skills to unlock new opportunities in the fast-developing technological world, and enhancing the youth, business, and academic institutions' participation in the digital economy.
He noted that GIFEC will roll out plans to collaborate with telecommunication companies to expand network infrastructure and improve connectivity in underserved and unserved areas across the country.
On funding, the Administrator noted that GIFEC faces challenges in meeting its objectives due to limited resources; however, the new team will adopt innovative approaches and leverage partnerships to overcome its challenges.
Dr Rashid Computer stressed the importance of transparency and accountability in governance, especially at the corporate levels, and urged the GIFEC team to support the initiatives for the total transformation of the agency.
“Dr Rashid Computer's appointment as the new GIFEC Administrator and CEO coincides with a period in which technical innovation and digital skills are becoming more and more important for economic development and progress,” CDA Consult stated.
CDA Consult believes that the new GIFEC Administrator/CEO is well-positioned to lead GIFEC in its objective to close the digital gap and strengthen communities throughout Ghana thanks to his love of ICT and his vision for a digitally inclusive nation.
