The telcos in Ghana have catastrophically failed to protect their customers from cybercrime, allowing their platforms to be exploited by scammers who ruthlessly fleece innocent citizens through deceitful practices. Enough is enough! It's time for an opt-in approach, where customers explicitly consent to services before being charged, rather than being automatically subscribed and then offered a half-hearted "opt-out" option.
The scourge of unsolicited ringtones subscriptions is a glaring example of this monumental failure, with cybercriminals raking in millions at the expense of vulnerable consumers. Furthermore, the egregious MTN data breach is a stark reminder of the industry's negligence. Every customer whose data was compromised must receive a formal notification, with the minister and regulators copied, to ensure transparency and accountability.
Moreover, the vanishing of money from mobile money accounts is a heinous crime that must be addressed. Telcos must be forced to repay all stolen funds after independent forensic investigations, ensuring victims receive justice and restitution.
Additionally, the persistent dropping of calls due to poor network quality is unacceptable. Telcos must prioritize investing in network infrastructure over flashy promotions, ensuring reliable and quality services for customers.
The minister must take decisive action: impose crippling fines, revoke frequency licenses, and shut down non-compliant telcos. Insiders who facilitated these breaches must be held accountable. The era of excuses and delays is over. Now is the time for accountability and action.
