Feature Article Infidelity in Marriage: Cultural Beliefs, Consequences, and Lessons for the Youth
MON, 28 APR 2025

Marriage is a sacred covenant, built on trust, commitment, and respect. When infidelity occurs, especially within a woman’s marriage, it does not only affect the two individuals involved—it ripples through the family, the community, and even the spiritual balance of the home. In many traditional societies, including among the Anlo people, a woman’s faithfulness is regarded as a pillar of stability, and any breach of this trust comes with severe consequences.

The Moral and Spiritual Consequences
Infidelity is more than a betrayal; it is believed to disrupt the harmony of the home. When trust is broken, it invites turmoil—not just emotional distress, but also unforeseen misfortunes. It is said that when a woman strays, the protection over her household weakens, leading to hardships that affect all who dwell under her roof. These consequences manifest in different ways—financial struggles, internal strife, and even unexplained adversities.

Impact on the Husband
A husband whose wife is unfaithful faces deep emotional pain and a loss of respect. A man is expected to uphold his household’s dignity, but when his wife is unfaithful, society may see him as weak or incapable of maintaining order. This can lead to withdrawal, broken trust, and in many cases, the dissolution of the marriage.

Impact on the Children
Children suffer greatly in the wake of a mother’s infidelity. They witness the unraveling of trust and may struggle to find their place in a fractured family. The effects can be lifelong—tainting their understanding of love, commitment, and integrity. Some may grow up with resentment, while others may internalize the shame, making it harder for them to form healthy relationships in their own future.

The Social and Familial Consequences
Marriage is not just a private affair; it is a bridge between families. When infidelity occurs, it damages these bonds, sometimes leading to severed relationships. Family elders may step in to resolve disputes, but such situations rarely leave the affected household unscathed. In some instances, cleansing rituals may be performed to restore balance, while others demand public accountability.

Lessons and Caution for the Youth
1. Value Integrity in Relationships

  • Marriage is built on trust. Dishonesty leads only to destruction.
2. Understand That Actions Have Consequences

  • Betrayal does not only hurt the individual—it burdens the entire family.
3. Seek Guidance from Elders and Wise Counsil

  • Those who have walked before you hold wisdom that can help avoid missteps.

4. Avoid Temptations That Lead to Infidelity

  • Distractions and desires may arise, but discipline and self-respect safeguard relationships.

5. Uphold the Honor of Your Family Name

  • Your actions reflect on your lineage and those who came before you.

Words to Reflect Upon

  • A home built on deception will surely crumble.”
  • -m“Dishonor calls misfortune; integrity invites peace."
  • “Marriage is the foundation of a family, and the strength of a family builds a strong society.”

Infidelity is not just a private mistake—it is a breach that affects generations. The youth must embrace the wisdom of fidelity, accountability, and respect to ensure a future where families remain strong, and trust is preserved.
