Tamale Teaching Hospital doctors call off strike, resume full services

The Doctors’ Association of Tamale Teaching Hospital (DATTH) has suspended its industrial action, which commenced on April 23, 2025, with immediate effect.

The strike followed an altercation during the visit of the Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, to the facility on April 22, about the demise of a patient which has seen raised public eyebrows.

In a statement dated April 26, the association directed its members to resume all services in addition to the earlier resumption of emergency and outpatient care.

According to the statement, the decision to suspend the strike came after a series of meetings with the Parliamentary Select Committee on Health, a delegation from the Overlord of Dagbon, His Majesty Ndan Yaa-Naa Abukari II, and the Minister for Health.

“At this meeting, the Minister of Health expressed his regret over the challenges the hospital has faced over the years and the unfortunate incident that occurred. The Minister also took the opportunity to speak to Dr. Valentine Akulpwa and expressed his regret for the turn of events,” the statement said.

The association said it remains committed to working with hospital management, the Ministry of Health, and other stakeholders to ensure a safe working environment and the availability of logistics to support healthcare delivery.

They, however, cautioned that, “Should there be a failure to provide the necessary logistics to facilitate healthcare delivery in the short to medium term, the association will advise itself appropriately.”
