Expose the Hypocrisy: The Real Reason Behind the NPP’s Protest Over the Chief Justice’s Suspension

Ghanaians must wake up and smell the political hypocrisy brewing right before our very eyes. The sudden agitation by the NPP and its so-called “opposition coalition” over the constitutional suspension of the Chief Justice (CJ) is nothing but a desperate, shameless attempt to shield themselves from accountability and the looming storm of justice called ORAL (Operation Recover and Account for Loot).

Let’s be blunt: there is no constitutional violation whatsoever in the suspension of the Chief Justice. Article 146 of the 1992 Constitution clearly spells out the procedure for dealing with alleged misconduct of the Chief Justice or other justices. President Mahama has scrupulously followed that legal path: a petition was received, a prima facie case was established by a committee, and the CJ was suspended pending a full inquiry. These are the plain, unvarnished facts.

So, what then is fuelling this manufactured outrage?

Fear! Fear of Accountability. Fear of ORAL. Fear of losing the protector they packed into the judiciary when they were in power.

During President Akufo-Addo’s tenure, Ghanaians witnessed the most unprecedented and alarming judicial appointments in the history of our republic. Akufo-Addo packed the Supreme Court and Court of Appeal with so many judges—many of them known loyalists—that it fundamentally tilted the balance of judicial independence. He made more appointments to the higher judiciary than any president before him! Yet, where was AFAG? Where were all these now-shouting voices screaming about “court packing”? Silent. Muted. Complicit.

Their real concern today is not about democracy or constitutional propriety. Their real concern is losing their implanted shield within the judiciary.

This current CJ was appointed by the very same Akufo-Addo administration. And through her actions—her strategic empaneling of judges, suspiciously swift hearing of NPP cases, endless delay of opposition-related cases, and tone-deaf public utterances—she has more than once exposed herself as leaning towards protecting the NPP’s political and financial interests.

Their desperation now is about ensuring that she remains firmly seated so that when ORAL swings into full action to retrieve the billions stolen over the past eight years, there will be judicial roadblocks to frustrate, delay, and kill those cases.

That is the real reason for their protest!
Ghanaians must see through this charade. This is not about defending the constitution—it is about defending corruption. It is about defending a judicial fortress they built to cover up eight years of unfettered rot, mismanagement, and nation-wrecking. Their fear is that a new, independent-minded Chief Justice will not be part of their conspiracy of silence and obstruction.

If there is anything truly “dangerous” to Ghana’s democracy, it is not the lawful suspension of a CJ after a prima facie case of misconduct has been established. The real danger is allowing a compromised judiciary to be weaponized to protect corrupt political elites from facing justice!

Their shamelessness knows no bounds. Imagine, those who stayed silent when judges were packed and loyalty was the yardstick for appointment are today crying crocodile tears about “court packing”! The height of dishonesty!

The security services must remain highly vigilant. The law is clear. If any group or individual attempts to disturb the peace under the guise of “protest,” they must be dealt with according to law. Ghanaians have suffered enough. We will not allow political saboteurs to derail the important national reset we are embarking on.

In conclusion, this fight is bigger than a CJ. It is about the soul of our republic. It is about ensuring that no one, however powerful, is above the law. Ghanaians must reject these hypocrites and stand firmly behind constitutional order and the pursuit of true justice.

History is watching. And we must not fail.
