The Majority Caucus in Parliament has issued a clarification, distancing itself from any involvement by the Parliamentary Sanitation Committee in the Youth Employment Agency’s (YEA) sanitation contract with Zoomlion Ghana Limited.
In a statement signed by Majority Leader and Leader of Government Business, Mahama Ayariga, the Caucus made it clear that no member of the Sanitation Committee has been authorised to intervene in the YEA’s contractual affairs.
“The Chairman of the Committee has reported to me that, contrary to media reports, neither he nor any committee member has attempted to interfere in the work of the YEA regarding the Zoomlion sanitation contract,” Ayariga stated.
He emphasised that any comments from individual committee members appearing to defend Zoomlion's engagement with the YEA should be disregarded, noting that such views do not represent the official position of the Committee or of Parliament itself.
The Majority Leader also urged Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs) to resist any intimidation or pressure to enter into sanitation contracts with specific companies.
Recalling a previous directive from former President John Dramani Mahama, Ayariga pointed out that Parliament had ensured 80% of the District Assemblies Common Fund was disbursed directly to the Assemblies, allowing them greater autonomy over their development projects.
He reaffirmed Parliament’s commitment to protecting the independence of local authorities and cautioned against any external attempts to influence their contractual decisions.
