A coalition of political parties, including the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has declared a nationwide protest set for Monday, May 5, in response to the suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo.
According to the parties, the demonstration is intended to defend the constitutional integrity of Ghana and safeguard the independence of the judiciary.
The decision to hit the streets was taken during an emergency meeting held on Thursday, April 24, 2025. Joining the NPP in the protest are the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG), National Democratic Party (NDP), People’s National Party (PNP), Ghana Union Movement (GUM), and several others.
The protesting parties issued a joint statement on Friday, April 25, condemning the suspension as a threat to judicial independence.
“The blatant disregard for the rule of law is not merely a political matter but rather an assault on the very soul of our democracy,” the statement said.
They went on to accuse the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) of a history of undermining the judiciary.
“The disturbing trend of judicial intimidation by the NDC is not new. The pattern is undeniable. A case in reference is the NDC failed plot in 2010 to remove Ghana's first female Chief Justice, Georgina Theodora Wood,” the statement asserted.
Organizers say the demonstration will serve as a powerful show of resistance against what they describe as a dangerous erosion of democratic values and the rule of law.

These people have no sense. What does the Constitution say? And where were these parties when Madam Charlotte Osei was removed through the same process. Nonsense.....
