The International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA-Ghana) has expressed concerns over the recent suspension of Chief Justice of the Republic, Her Ladyship Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo.

In a press release dated April 24, the group said the move does not only threaten judicial independence but also poses a setback for the country’s quest for gender parity in national leadership.

FIDA-Ghana cautioned that such actions risk discouraging competent and qualified women from accepting appointments to serve in key state institutions.

“These actions serve only to weaken public and constitutional institutions and may potentially discourage competent and qualified individuals, particularly women, from accepting appointments to serve their nation in those institutions,” the statement, signed by Executive Director, Susan Aryeetey, read in part.

The group also drew attention to the unfulfilled promise of ensuring women’s participation in governance as stated in the NDC’s “Resetting Ghana” manifesto.

It said the failure to meet the 30% representation target outlined in the Affirmative Action (Gender Equity) Act, 2024 (Act 1121) undermines the spirit of the law.

“This flies in the face of the promises in the NDC ‘Resetting Ghana’ Manifesto. FIDA is therefore urging government to ensure that it keeps to its promise to the women of Ghana,” the statement noted.

FIDA- Ghana is advocating for transparency in the removal process and quick reforms to increase protections for office holders, particularly women in high-level constitutional positions.

President Mahama, on Tuesday, suspended Chief Justice Torkornoo with immediate effect, citing a prima facie case established against her in three separate petitions.

The suspension, in accordance with Article 146(6) of the 1992 Constitution, was made in consultation with the Council of State.

A statement from the Presidency, signed by the Minister of State in charge of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, also announced the formation of a committee to inquire into the petitions.

I want to ask the International Federation of Women Lawyers that when the subject of concern, Gertrude Torkornoo, sided with Akufo-Addo and the NPP politicians and ignored the needs of the impoverished Ghanaians, where were they? In my opinion, Ghana Bar Association and other judiciary bodies were responsible for the collapse of Ghana's infrastructure because they supported a corrupt, state-capture and Agyapdie government

Do you support the suspension and removal of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo?
