Your first duty is to Ghanaians, not your political survival — Mahama to Ministers

President John Dramani Mahama has reminded his ministers that their foremost responsibility is to serve the people of Ghana, not to chase political survival, applause, or personal gain.

Addressing ministers at the Executive Leadership Retreat in Ada on Thursday, April 24, the President cautioned them against complacency, urging them to reject opulence and make the judicious use of public funds a priority.

“Spend public funds wisely and judiciously. Reject opulence. And never forget: your first duty is to the people of Ghana—not your political survival, not the applause, and not official gain,” Mahama said.

He emphasized that ministers were not appointed to occupy space but to solve problems and deliver results that improve the living conditions of Ghanaians.

“You were not appointed to occupy space. You were appointed to solve problems. The Ghanaian people expect us to deliver—not with excuses, but with results,” he stated.

Mahama also noted that this term—his final in office—is a legacy one, and he intends to make it count. He therefore charged his ministers to lead their sectors with vision, integrity, and innovation.

“This is my legacy term. I intend to make it count. I issue this challenge to each of you to lead your sectors with vision and integrity, champion innovation, make decisions based on facts and data, and not on guesswork,” he added.
