"Ashanti Region is not for King Zuba" — KOD, Adum-blue light Traders send strong message

Ashanti Region is not for King Zuba — KOD, Adum-blue light Traders send strong message

A fresh wave of protest erupted at Adum-Blue Light in Kumasi on Thursday morning as some aggrieved traders voiced their displeasure over the recent deployment of military personnel to the area.

Among the placards hoisted during the mini-demonstration was one that read: "Ashanti Region is not for Zuba."

The protest followed the demolition of barricades that had been erected by city authorities at key entry and exit points of the market. These barriers were intended to restrict trading activities in the area and make way for the planned redevelopment of the market and other dilapidated structures.

However, the traders say they were not consulted and expressed strong dissatisfaction with both the redevelopment plans and what they described as a heavy-handed military response.

Coinciding with the protest was a visit from the leadership of the Keen on Development Foundation, a local NGO. The team, led by its founder Kyeremeh Oppong Daniel, popularly known as “K.O.D.” and former President of the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS), arrived to assess the damage, offer support, and donate relief items to affected traders.

After presenting 50 bags of cement and GH₵10,000 in cash, K.O.D. criticised the city’s approach to the redevelopment effort.

He stated that Kumasi Mayor Hon. Richard Ofori Agyeman Boadi, also known as “King Zuba,” should have consulted the traders before proceeding with any eviction.

He emphasised, “We want to send this message to King Zuba. We will not allow you to take the business of our mothers and fathers. We are sending this same message to any government official who is behind this. If you have better plans on the redevelopment of this area, come over and have a discussion with the traders on that.”

He further urged authorities to involve stakeholders in decisions that affect their livelihoods.

“Give them space to express their views and interest before taking any action,” he advised.

K.O.D. also encouraged the traders to remain firm and continue their business operations.

“We are urging the traders to keep on with their business here. Nobody can infringe your rights of doing business. We support you fully,” he encouraged.
