The Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection (MoGCSP), in collaboration with the Ministry of Education (MoE), has announced the official launch of the Free Sanitary Pad Initiative.
The launch is scheduled for Thursday, April 24, 2025, at the Salvation Army Cluster of Schools in Accra.
The announcement was made during a joint press conference on Wednesday, April 23, held at the Ministry of Education’s conference room. The event was organised to inform the public and media stakeholders about the significance of the initiative, which is a key part of President John Dramani Mahama’s broader agenda to promote gender equality and enhance menstrual health among schoolgirls.
Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, Dr. Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, emphasized the critical need for such an intervention to tackle the ongoing challenges girls face in managing their menstrual hygiene while in school.
“This intervention is designed to remove one of the silent barriers to girls' education,” Dr. Lartey stated. “By providing access to free sanitary pads, we are not only supporting girls' health but also empowering them to stay in school and succeed.”
Dr. Lartey revealed that the initiative will reach an estimated two million girls in Junior and Senior High Schools nationwide, aiming to reduce absenteeism, boost school retention, and improve academic performance.
She also appealed to the media to play an active role in promoting awareness and educating the public about the far-reaching impact of the programme.
The Free Sanitary Pad Initiative is part of the government’s comprehensive strategy to close gender gaps in education and ensure that all children, regardless of gender, have equal opportunities to learn in safe and supportive environments.
