Alliance for Civic Action commends Mahama's Feed Ghana Policy

The Alliance for Civic Action (ACA) has expressed strong admiration and full support for the Government of Ghana’s Feed Ghana Programme, describing it as a transformative initiative with the potential to rejuvenate the country’s agricultural sector, reduce reliance on food imports, create sustainable employment, and boost the national economy.

In a press statement signed by the General Secretary, Mr. Francis Kwesi Badu, the ACA commended the programme's structure, which it said is built around key thematic areas that, if fully implemented, will help position Ghana as a food-secure and economically resilient nation.

We wish to elaborate on these pillars and call on all Ghanaians to rally behind this national cause.

1. Boost Agricultural Production
This programme places strategic focus on increasing domestic agricultural output through enhanced farmer support, mechanization, and modern farming techniques. Mass production under this initiative will not only ensure food security but will also enhance local raw material availability for industries.

2. Reduce Food Imports
Ghana spends billions annually importing food commodities. With Feed Ghana, we aim to reverse this trend. For instance, under the Akorkukor Nkitinkiti programme , a focused drive to mass-produce local chicken—we anticipate a significant reduction in chicken imports. Ghana currently loses over $400 million annually through poultry imports, which exerts immense pressure on our exchange rate. The success of Akorkukor Nkitinkiti alone could liberate our economy from such dependency and restore the value of the cedi.

3. Create Jobs
The programme is designed to absorb thousands of unemployed youth into various agricultural value chains—from crop cultivation to processing and distribution. By establishing a thriving agribusiness ecosystem, Feed Ghana directly addresses the unemployment crisis and revitalizes rural economies.

4. Farmer Support
Access to quality seeds, fertilizers, credit facilities, and extension services is key. The Feed Ghana programme prioritizes equipping farmers with the necessary inputs and knowledge, ensuring their productivity and profitability. ACA will advocate for transparency and fairness in distributing these resources.

5. Infrastructure Development
Farm roads, irrigation systems, storage facilities, and market linkages are critical for agricultural success. Feed Ghana’s infrastructure development plan will connect farms to markets, minimize post-harvest losses, and ensure timely delivery of produce, especially in remote communities.

6. Agro-Industrial Zones
These zones will be the heartbeat of Ghana’s agro-processing revolution. By clustering industries around farming communities, the programme will provide value addition, reduce waste, and increase Ghana’s export potential. This is a game-changer for industrial growth and job creation.

7. Oil Palm Production
With rising global demand for palm oil, Ghana has a unique opportunity to expand its oil palm production. The programme’s focus on oil palm will tap into this demand, positioning Ghana as a key player in the regional and global palm oil market while generating massive employment and revenue.

The Alliance for Civic Action (ACA) is committed to partnering with the government to ensure strict monitoring, transparency, and effective implementation of the Feed Ghana Programme. We recognize that this initiative is not just a political programme but a national vision that must be protected and supported.

We caution the government and the Hon. Minister of Agriculture to be vigilant against detractors, especially elements within opposition parties who historically sabotage developmental programmes for political gain. These actions are unpatriotic and must not be tolerated.

ACA is highly delighted by this initiative. We urge the government: Do not fail us. Let this vision see the light of day. Let it change lives. Let it feed Ghana.
