Election 2024: Mahama won because 2.1 million NPP supporters didn’t vote – Bawumia

2024 flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has pointed to voter apathy within the party as the primary reason for its defeat in the 2024 general elections.

Addressing party members during the NPP’s “Thank You” tour on Wednesday, April 23, at the party’s headquarters in Accra, Dr. Bawumia disclosed that a significant number of supporters stayed away from the polls—an absence that proved costly.

“Notwithstanding our hard work, we still suffered a heavy defeat. When you look at what happened, you will see that it was internal. Many of our supporters did not come out to vote,” he said.

Former Vice President stressed that the drop in voter turnout among NPP supporters was stark when compared to previous elections, particularly the 2020 polls.

“This is fundamentally why we lost the election. If you look at 2020 vis-à-vis 2024, 2.1 million of our supporters did not come out to vote. So, the key to victory is within the NPP because we decided not to vote. So, if we decide to vote, we will win,” Dr. Bawumia explained.

His comments come as the party begins internal reflection and restructuring efforts aimed at rebuilding momentum ahead of future contests.

Useless conclusion! What it means is that, if they had voted, they would not have voted for NPP. You are lucky that they did not vote - your defeat would have been damning.
