The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has called on government to adopt tougher measures in the fight against illegal small-scale mining, locally known as galamsey.

The Association is demanding a total repeal of Legislative Instrument (LI) 2462 — officially known as the Environmental Protection (Mining in Forest Reserves) Regulations, 2022 — and the declaration of a state of emergency in targeted areas.

Speaking at a press conference on Wednesday, April 23, GJA President, Albert Kwabena Dwumfour, commended the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, for his commitment to the fight.

“We wish to, at this point, commend the Minister, Honourable Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, for his show of commitment to the fight against galamsey.

“We, however, think there is more to be done to ensure greater success, such as the repeal of the law that allows for mining in forest reserves and the declaration of a state of emergency in targeted areas to ensure a frontal attack on galamsey,” said the GJA President.

The Association also urged government to enhance protection for journalists working on environmental issues and support their efforts to expose environmental degradation.

“We also demand from the Minister and the government the protection of journalists and facilitation of their work in mining areas to enable them discharge their duties without fear, threats, or harm.

“We ask the Minister to immediately collaborate with the GJA and the media to develop strategies that will enable the media to play a greater and more impactful role in the fight against the galamsey menace,” he added.

When the situation was at its worst under the government of Akufo-Addo, you couldn't issue this statement, but now that Mahama is handling the situation better, you are asking him to declare a state of emergency. What is the meaning of this, GJA chief?

Do you support the suspension and removal of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo?
