Thank you for your courage in suspending Chief Justice — Sammy Gyamfi lauds Mahama

The National Communications Officer of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), Sammy Gyamfi, has lauded President John Dramani Mahama for suspending Chief Justice Gertrude Esaaba Torkornoo.

Mr. Gyamfi, who also serves as the Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Gold Board, described the move as a testament to the President’s fidelity to the Constitution and the rule of law.

“Thank you, President John Dramani Mahama, for your courage. Your suspension of the Chief Justice in accordance with the advice of the Council of State is a testament of your fidelity to the Constitution and the rule of law,” he wrote on X.

The decision follows the President’s determination, in accordance with Article 146(6) of the 1992 Constitution and in consultation with the Council of State, that a prima facie case has been established in respect of three petitions filed against the Chief Justice.

A statement from the Presidency dated April 22 and signed by Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Minister of State in Charge of Government Communications, announced that, in line with constitutional provisions, the President has also constituted a committee to inquire into the petitions.

Meanwhile, a former Deputy Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Alfred Tuah-Yeboah, has criticised the Council of State’s advice to suspend the Chief Justice.

The decision, which takes immediate effect until the outcome of investigations into the petitions, is, according to Mr. Tuah-Yeboah, “poisonous.”
