The Executive Director of Agrihouse Foundation, Alberta Nana Akyaa Akosa, has called on Ghanaian youth to take full advantage of the government’s Nkoko Nkitikiti policy, describing it as a transformative opportunity for economic empowerment and national food security.

Speaking at the official launch of the 5th edition of the Ghana Poultry Day Festival, slated for July 1st at the forecourt of the Jubilee House, Ms Akosa emphasized the urgent need to reposition poultry farming as a gateway to sustainable livelihoods. This year’s celebration is strategically themed to inspire youth participation in poultry farming while promoting agribusiness as a viable path to employment and wealth creation.

“We are at a critical point where the youth must see agriculture, particularly poultry farming, not just as a backup plan, but as a serious and rewarding business opportunity,” Ms. Akosa stated. “The Nkoko Nkitikiti policy is a direct call to action, and we are urging young people to take full advantage of this initiative to build sustainable careers and contribute to national development.”

In an innovative move to drive active engagement during the festival, Agrihouse Foundation and its partners will distribute day-old chicks to all attendees. This practical gesture aims to spark genuine interest among young participants and offer them a tangible starting point in poultry farming.

“Our goal is to make agriculture relatable, practical, and accessible,” Ms. Akosa added. “By giving each attendee a chick, we are literally placing opportunity in their hands. It’s symbolic, but also deeply practical it encourages them to start something, no matter how small.”

Dr. Comfort Acheampong, Chairperson of the 2025 Ghana Poultry Day Planning Committee, also used the platform to appeal to the government to formally institutionalize the Ghana Poultry Day Festival as a national policy event. According to her, such a move would help entrench the significance of poultry farming in Ghana’s socio-economic development agenda.

“Ghana Poultry Day deserves recognition at the highest level,” Dr Acheampong said. “Institutionalizing this celebration will go a long way in reinforcing the importance of the poultry sector—not just in terms of food security, but also its potential to generate employment, reduce imports, and stabilize the local economy.”

She noted that beyond awareness, formal government backing would inspire stronger private-sector investment and broader public participation in poultry-related initiatives across the country.

Agrihouse Foundation has consistently championed the cause of agribusiness in Ghana through impactful programs and initiatives tailored to youth, women, and smallholder farmers. With the 5th Ghana Poultry Day Festival on the horizon, the Foundation continues to reaffirm its commitment to agricultural advocacy, innovation, and empowerment.

“This year’s event is more than a celebration it’s a call to action,” Ms. Akosa concluded. “We invite everyone, especially the youth, to join us on July 1st as we take practical steps toward food security and economic transformation through poultry farming.”
