As Ghana embarks on its ambitious One Million Coders Initiative, a crucial step in resetting our economy and transforming Ghana into a prosperous and equitable society in the AI era, telecommunications companies like MTN and smartphone manufacturers like Tecno, which produces phones locally, have a unique opportunity to contribute to the nation-building process. By providing a minimum amount of free data bundles to all customers, telcos can help ensure internet access becomes a fundamental human right for Ghanaians.
This initiative is not just about coding; it's about empowering a nation by bridging the digital divide and unlocking economic potential. Internet access can drive innovation, economic growth, and social inclusion. By partnering with the government and civil society, telcos can help drive digital inclusion and ensure Ghana's digital future is equitable and prosperous for all.
Paradoxically, providing minimum free data bundles can also benefit telcos in the long run. As more Ghanaians access the internet, they will inevitably require more data, leading to increased sales of data bundles and ultimately, higher revenues for telcos.
Moreover, local smartphone manufacturers like Tecno can make a significant impact by offering high-quality, basic-level smartphones for under GHC 350. This would enable more Ghanaians to access the internet and participate in the digital economy.
To encourage local manufacturing and innovation, a special tax holiday period of ten years could be considered for Tecno and other tech companies. This would attract more investment, create jobs, and make high-quality smartphones more affordable for Ghanaians.
By working together, Ghana can become a digitally empowered nation, where every citizen has access to opportunities in the AI era. Let's seize this moment to build a brighter future for all Ghanaians.
