Lawyer Kwame Jantuah, a leading member of the Convention People’s Party (CPP), has expressed concern over the unending conflict in Bawku.
The escalating dispute has recently intensified, with deadly clashes between civilians and police resulting in multiple injuries and the killing of two police officers in Binduri.
Speaking in an interview on Accra-based GHOne TV, Mr. Jantuah questioned why the two ethnic groups involved in the conflict have failed to engage in dialogue to resolve their differences.
“I don’t understand why the two sides can’t talk — the Kusasis and the Mamprusis. What is it? What is it that we can’t talk about? What is the challenge?” he quizzed.
Meanwhile, the mediation process led by the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, aimed at resolving the protracted conflict, is scheduled to resume on April 28.
According to the Manhyia Palace, the peace talks will continue until May 1, with both factions expected to participate in the sessions in Kumasi.
A statement issued by the Palace on Monday, April 15, said, “Asantehene requests all stakeholders to cooperate for us to find a lasting peace in Bawku.”
The mediation is part of national efforts to end the years of violence that have plagued the Bawku area, leading to the loss of lives, destruction of property, and displacement of residents.
