The mediation process led by the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, aimed at resolving the protracted Bawku conflict, is set to resume on April 28.
According to the Manhyia Palace, the peace talks will continue until May 1, with both factions expected to participate in the sessions in Kumasi.
A statement issued by the Palace on Monday, April 15, said, “Asantehene requests all stakeholders to cooperate for us to find a lasting peace in Bawku.”
The process is part of efforts to end years of conflict that has plagued the Bawku area, resulting in deaths, destruction of property, and displacement.
President John Dramani Mahama, during the Graduation Parade of the Ghana Military Academy on Friday, April 11, expressed confidence in the mediation efforts led by Otumfuo.
“One major flashpoint continues to be the Bawku area. Only two days ago, an incident in a marketplace triggered an unfortunate loss of lives and criminal vandalism of property. I wish to emphasize that nobody gains from this situation of conflict and insecurity,” the President said.
He added, “We have triggered the Otumfuo Osei Tutu II mediation process, which saw all stakeholders participate in discussions in Kumasi on a roadmap towards peace. I’m assured by the Asantehene that the process will resume next week when he returns from his brief visit abroad.”
President Mahama also commended the military for their continued efforts to maintain peace in the area and called on all factions to support the ongoing peace process.
