The Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Frank Amoakohene, has urged supporters of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the region to remain calm and accept whoever President John Dramani Mahama nominates as Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs).
This comes amid growing concerns from some party members in the region who feel that loyal and active members are being overlooked in favour of newcomers for MMDCE appointments.
Addressing the media on Tuesday, April 15, Dr. Amoakohene advised party members to refrain from acts of violence aimed at resisting or overturning the President’s choices.
“You cannot take the law into your own hands and expect protection or cover from us as leaders — no. Any riot or disturbance reflects directly and negatively on the President.
“The President will make the appointments, and we will work with whoever he appoints. No one will be allowed to force our hands to select someone else on his behalf,” the Minister stated.
Dr. Amoakohene also revealed that intelligence gathered suggests that some individuals plan to incite chaos, believing the party will shield them from accountability.
According to him, anyone who breaks the law — regardless of political affiliation — will face the full rigours of the law.
“I have placed the security agencies on red alert and cautioned all party members not to misbehave or hide behind party colours. We’ve picked up intelligence that some people are mobilising to back aggrieved candidates.
“Some people want to cry more than the bereaved, disguising themselves in party paraphernalia and going out to cause trouble, pretending to be loyal supporters. But crime knows no party colour. If you break the law, you will be arrested and prosecuted,” he warned.
He added, “Let this serve as a warning to anyone planning to misbehave when the list is released — if you fall foul of the law, don’t come to our offices to plead. That would be a disgrace to the President, the party, mother Ghana, and our democracy. We will not tolerate it.”
