As we have approached a pivotal moment in our nation’s history with the assumption of office by President John Dramani Mahama and the National Democratic Congress (NDC), it is important to remind ourselves of the resilience and determination that have characterized the NDC’s leadership in the past. Despite the challenges that lie ahead, the NDC, under President Mahama’s stewardship, has proven time and again that it has the vision, capability, and commitment to tackle the most daunting of national crises.
We are no strangers to adversity, and as a country, we have faced, and overcome, considerable hardships before. The current state of the economy and infrastructure may appear troubling, but history has shown that the NDC has the experience and expertise to transform such challenges into opportunities for growth, development, and prosperity.
1. Inheriting a Crippled Economy
In 2013, when President Mahama took over the leadership of the country, Ghana was in a similar situation. The economy was reeling from the effects of global market fluctuations, a heavy debt burden, and a number of internal inefficiencies. Yet, through a combination of sound economic policies, international cooperation, and strategic management, the NDC under Mahama’s leadership successfully stabilized the economy, achieving impressive growth rates and transforming sectors such as infrastructure, education, and healthcare.
Today, we are again faced with a challenging economic climate. Domestic and foreign debt obligations remain pressing, and inflation has eroded the purchasing power of many Ghanaians. However, the NDC has a proven track record of navigating such challenges. Under President Mahama’s leadership, we successfully negotiated debt restructuring programs, implemented fiscal reforms, and restored growth. With his wealth of experience, the NDC is more than equipped to tackle the economic difficulties we face today and restore fiscal discipline.
2. Addressing the Energy Crisis
One of the defining issues in President Mahama’s first term was the energy crisis, often referred to as “dumsor,” caused by an estimated $2.5 billion debt in the energy sector. Despite the severity of this crisis, the NDC did not shy away from confronting the problem head-on. Through strategic investments in power generation, the negotiation of international agreements, and a push for reforms within the energy sector, President Mahama was able to bring stability to our power supply. The lessons learned during this time have equipped the NDC with the tools necessary to prevent another energy crisis and ensure reliable electricity for all Ghanaians.
3. Improving Education and Public Services
Education is the backbone of any developing nation, and during Mahama’s tenure, significant strides were made in the sector. While we acknowledge that there were challenges such as textbook shortages and delayed exam results due to financial constraints, it is important to highlight the initiatives the NDC introduced to address these issues. From the provision of free senior high school education to the expansion of technical and vocational training programs, the NDC placed education at the heart of its national development agenda.
Today, with the issue of unpaid food suppliers and textbook shortages still fresh in our minds, it is essential to trust that the NDC has the right experience to resolve these challenges. With a commitment to prioritizing education, and with President Mahama’s leadership, the NDC will ensure that all schoolchildren receive the materials, food, and support they need to excel in their studies.
4. Addressing Unpaid Arrears and Unemployment
Under the Mahama administration, we witnessed the launch of the National Builders Corps (NABCO), a program designed to provide temporary employment for graduates in a country facing high youth unemployment. Despite the challenges, such as the delay in arrears payments to NABCO workers, the initiative served as an important stepping stone towards tackling youth unemployment. The NDC recognizes that there is more work to be done in providing sustainable jobs for the youth of Ghana, and President Mahama is determined to continue on this path, ensuring that the next phase of NABCO and other employment initiatives are fully funded and properly executed.
5. Restoring Confidence in Key State Institutions
The state of our national institutions, from the Bank of Ghana’s losses to the ongoing challenges at COCOBOD and the Tema Oil Refinery, paints a grim picture. However, it is critical to recognize that President Mahama’s tenure saw the rebuilding of key institutions, including significant reforms within the banking sector to ensure stability and growth. The NDC’s approach to managing our state-owned enterprises (SOEs) is grounded in transparency, accountability, and strategic investment, all of which will be crucial to returning these institutions to profitability and sustainability.
In particular, the NDC understands that the recovery of key sectors like agriculture, energy, and manufacturing requires innovation, effective management, and political will. The Mahama administration proved its ability to revitalize such sectors, and the same will be done for the oil, cocoa, and water sectors that are now under stress.
6. Preserving Our Natural Resources
Illegal mining and environmental degradation remain urgent challenges for our country. Under the Mahama administration, we saw steps taken to combat illegal mining and protect our forest reserves. While more needs to be done, President Mahama is committed to enhancing the legal frameworks to prevent the destruction of our natural resources. With his track record of working with international partners to protect Ghana’s environment, we can be confident that these issues will be addressed with urgency and expertise.
Conclusion: Hope in the Face of Challenges
It is undeniable that Ghana faces serious challenges. However, history has shown that when the NDC, under the leadership of President Mahama, has faced similar or even greater challenges in the past, we have emerged stronger and more resilient. The NDC is not just a political party; it is a movement grounded in the belief that with the right leadership, no challenge is insurmountable.
The experience, dedication, and integrity that President Mahama brings to the table will ensure that Ghana will overcome its current difficulties and emerge stronger than before. We urge all Ghanaians to have faith in the capacity of our nation and its leadership. Together, we will rise, rebuild, and ensure a brighter future for all.
The NDC Has Done It Before. We Will Do It Again.
