Dr. Kojo Impraim, Director of Media for Peace and Social Cohesion at the Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA), has bemoaned the negative impact of unverified information.
He noted that the spread of misinformation is compromising information integrity in Ghana and across the West African sub-region.
Dr. Impraim made the statement at the launch of a study report titled “The State of Mis/Disinformation, Polarisation, and State Threats to Ghana” in Accra on Wednesday, March 26.
The study forms part of activities under the project “The Role of Political Parties and Other Stakeholders in Countering Information Disorder and Propaganda Narratives in the 2024 Elections in Ghana,” funded by the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO).
“Issues of false claims are compromising information integrity in Ghana and other parts of West Africa,” he said.
According to him, the release of the research findings is timely, especially as social media influencers and foreign actors use digital platforms to spread misinformation and disinformation.
“We recommend that the media establish fact-checking desks to promote information hygiene and ensure that the public consumes only safe and factual content,” Dr. Impraim said.
