Minority Leader in Parliament and MP for Effutu, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has criticized the John Dramani Mahama-led National Democratic Congress (NDC) government for allegedly neglecting farmers in its strongholds.
According to him, farmers in the Volta, Oti and Savannah regions are struggling, yet the government has failed to provide them with the necessary support.
Speaking on the floor of Parliament on Tuesday, March 25, he lamented the inadequate funding allocated to the Ministry of Agriculture.
“You are not doing anything for the poor farmer in the Volta and Oti regions, and it’s painful.
“The poor farmers in Volta, the poor farmers in Akatsi, they are not getting any support. And then you render Eric Opoku redundant at the Ministry of Agriculture. What a shame,” he said.
His comments follow similar concerns raised by former Minister of Food and Agriculture and MP for Abetifi, Bryan Acheampong, who described the government’s GH¢1.5 billion allocation—just 0.5% of the total GH¢290 billion budget—as inadequate for a sector crucial to Ghana’s economy.
In a social media post on Thursday, March 13, Acheampong warned that underfunding agriculture could lead to a food crisis.

The suffering happened because before the NPP lost power, its politicians, including Bryan Acheampong, stole all the bags of fertilizers to assist Ghanaian farmers. Maham will find a solution for them very soon. If you are looking for people who speak without thinking, don't look far; the NPP is always available.
