Dr George Akuffo Dampare was one police officer loved by many, he knitted very well with the people long before he became the Inspector General of Police. His relationship with the people was perfect, which caused the hue and cry when he was transferred to head the Police Command and Staff College at Winneba, barely six months when he was elevated to Accra Regional Command as the regional commander. Most saw the transfer asa demotion and were not too happy with it.
Most Ghanaians were elated when he finally became the Inspector General of Police and he brought some new life into the Police Service, to the admiration of most Ghanaians. It was sad when he realized a plot to oust him had thickened by his contemporaries, it made him to lost control and chose to pander to the dictates of the ruling government which eventually dampen his morale.
In an attempt to maintained command and control of the Police Service he became dictatorial to the rank and file in the service, and portrayed different identity to the public. which had culminated to all the stories being peddled about Dr Akuffo Dampare that had led to his dismissal.
We expected him to learnt lessons from the mistreatment of the former Inspector General of Police Mr David Asante Appeatu who did his best for President Nana Akufo Addo and the New Patriotic Party. He was disgracefully retired barely a month to clock the ultimate 60 years, President Nana Akufo Addo did not considered the invaluable contribution he made for his government, he vehemently refused to allow him retire graciously on his date of birth.
The conduct of the president was a clear manifestation to all his appointees, he can disappoint and disgrace them at will if he is not comfortable with their performance. This should have motivate Dr. George Akuffo Dampare to continue to do his good job with all credibility and absolute professionalism and should damned the consequences, than being sycophantic to the president.
Dr Dampare became so vulnerable and lost touch of his responsibility after the elections. He should have tender his resignation when he saw all the odds are against him, he remained in office till the inevitable occurred.
Political appointees must learn to serve the people more than being stooges to their political actors. They have a reputation to maintain therefore they should not mortgaged their reputation for wealth.
