The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA), in collaboration with Bloomberg Philanthropies and key international partners, has rolled out the second phase of the Youth Climate Action Fund (YCAF), a global initiative designed to empower young people aged 15 to 24 to take meaningful action against climate change.
Launched on Wednesday, March 19, 2025, at the Accra City Hall, the initiative aims to support youth-led climate projects across the metropolis.
With an additional budget of $100,000, phase two is expected to scale up the impact of community-driven climate solutions.
Speaking at the event, the Coordinating Director of AMA, Mr. Douglas N.K. Annoful emphasised the urgency of addressing climate change, which he described as one of the most pressing challenges of modern times.
He highlighted that the effects of climate change, including unpredictable weather patterns and rising sea levels, were already being felt globally and in Accra.
Nuumo Okassa Diaka II, a renowned traditional leader in the Ga State's Asere Abesse division and officer at the Accra Metropolitan Assembly, has added his voice to the urgent call for residents of Jamestown to be mindful of their waste management practices.
He emphasized the need for the community to refrain from disposing of waste and human excreta into gutters, as these actions have severe consequences on the environment and public health. The traditional leader warned that such practices contribute to climate change, ultimately affecting the community in the long run.
Furthermore, Numo Okassa Diaka II expressed concern that these actions hinder the city authorities' ability to perform their duties effectively. He also criticized the tendency of political parties to intervene on behalf of offenders, creating a sense of impunity among citizens and undermining the rule of law.
The traditional leader's statement serves as a timely reminder of the importance of responsible waste management and community cooperation in maintaining a clean and healthy environment.
