President John Dramani Mahama has advised traders to avoid using gas cylinders in markets to help prevent recurring fire outbreaks.

Mr. Mahama observed that the use of gas stoves in markets sometimes causes or escalates fires, making it difficult for firefighters to contain the situation.

The President made this statement during a visit to the Adum Central Market, where a fire outbreak occurred in the early hours of Friday, March 21, to assess the extent of the damage.

“You can hear explosions still happening. They are all as a result of gas cookers. People use gas cylinders in the market, which contributes to these recurring fires. I will plead with everyone to avoid cooking in markets,” Mr. Mahama said.

The President also called for a review of market planning to ensure proper access routes that would facilitate firefighting efforts.

“It is very sad looking at the number of stores destroyed by the fire. First, I want to commend the Fire Service for working hard to control the situation.

“The Ghana National Fire Service informed me that gaining access to the inner part of the market, where the fire was spreading, was difficult. I think we must take lessons from this and plan our markets better,” he added.

Mr. Mahama further assured the affected traders of government support, stating that he had directed the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) to assist them.

“I have told NADMO to provide support to the affected traders to cushion them from the effects of the disaster,” he noted.
