Renowned journalist and OFA Brand Ambassador Mr. Anim Addo has emphasized the crucial role of agriculture in Ghana’s economy. He stressed that if more Members of Parliament invested in the sector, the country's school feeding program could become self-sufficient.
Speaking at a stakeholder forum organized by OFA, Mr. Addo highlighted Hon. Kwabina Minta Akanor as a prime example of what is possible in agriculture, citing his ownership of 2,500 hectares of farmland as evidence that large-scale farming is achievable for Ghanaians. However, he expressed concern about the lack of interest in large-scale agriculture and the slow adoption of technology, both of which continue to hinder the sector’s potential.
Mr. Addo urged the government and national leaders to prioritize agriculture, emphasizing its power to drive economic transformation. Dr. Joseph Hongar, another key speaker at the forum, echoed this message by describing agriculture as the backbone of Ghana’s economy, employing approximately 40% of the country’s workforce. He noted that the forum, which focused on tree crops, provided a unique opportunity for farmers, NGOs, businesses, and policymakers to discuss ways to leverage agriculture for national development.
“Agriculture is the backbone of our country, providing jobs for about 40% of our workforce. Today's forum focuses on tree crops, a vital sub-sector with immense potential for economic growth and development. We have gathered farmers, NGOs, businesses, and other stakeholders to explore how agriculture can transform Ghana’s economy,” Dr. Hongar stated.
Henry Abraham, CEO of Organic Farming Aid (OFA), highlighted the significant impact OFA has had on Ghanaian farmers, particularly those cultivating tree crops. He addressed participants at the forum, stating that agriculture remains the foundation of the country’s economy, and innovations like OFA offer farmers the opportunity to maximize yields, boost incomes, and reduce reliance on imported fertilizers.
According to Henry Abraham, OFA has already proven its potential to double the income of maize and rice farmers, while tree crop farmers could see earnings increase by as much as 15,000 to 20,000 Ghanaian cedis per acre.
The 5th OFA Forum, themed "GROW MORE PROFITABLE AND SUSTAINABLE TREE CROPS WITH OFA!" brought together farmers, researchers, policymakers, NGOs, and businesses to discuss the benefits of OFA for tree crop farmers. Henry Abraham reaffirmed his commitment to promoting OFA as a game-changer for Ghana’s agricultural sector, with the potential to uplift farmers and contribute to the nation’s economic progress.
