The Minister of Gender, Children and Social Protection, Hon. Dr. Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, has announced the release of 265,220,000 Ghana Cedis for the 94th and 95th cycles of the Livelihood Empowerment Against Poverty (LEAP) program.
This joint disbursement will benefit 350,000 households across 260 metropolitan, municipal, and district assemblies in Ghana.
The LEAP program provides cash grants to extremely poor and vulnerable households, with the grant amount varying based on the number of eligible household members. To qualify for the LEAP program, households must include extremely poor and vulnerable individuals, such as orphans, vulnerable children, elderly persons (65 years and older) without support, individuals with severe disabilities, and extremely poor pregnant women and lactating mothers with infants under one year.
"I am pleased to announce that the government has released 265,220,000 Ghana Cedis for these joint cycles of payments. These funds will be disbursed to 350,000 LEAP beneficiary households in 260 metropolitan, municipal, and district assemblies," said Hon. Dr. Agnes Naa Momo Lartey.
Breakdown of Grant Amounts:
- One eligible member household: 512 Ghana Cedis
- Two eligible member households: 608 Ghana Cedis
- Three eligible member households: 704 Ghana Cedis
- Four or more eligible member households: 848 Ghana Cedis
According to Hon. Dr. Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, "The LEAP program aims to reduce poverty and vulnerability by providing sustained consumption support. We encourage beneficiaries to focus on essential areas such as household nutrition, children's education, and income-generating activities."
She emphasized that the Ministry is initiating a comprehensive reassessment of all beneficiary households to evaluate their continued eligibility. The Ghana National Household Registry is expected to complete its ongoing registration soon, which will help better target households for the program.
Additionally, the Minister noted that the government plans to increase the number of beneficiary households from 350,000 to 400,000, with an allocation of 953.5 million Ghana Cedis for LEAP benefits in the 2025 financial year.
The Minister also urged beneficiaries to prioritize essential areas such as household nutrition, children's education, and income-generating activities. The LEAP program, which aims to alleviate poverty and vulnerability through sustained consumption, is supported by partners including the World Bank, UNICEF, the World Food Programme, and the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office.
In conclusion, the Minister called on all stakeholders to support the LEAP reassessment and encouraged the general public to report any concerns that may undermine the program's objectives.
