Minister for Defence, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, convened an important meeting to tackle the food supply issues facing the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF).

The discussions aimed at establishing a sustainable food supply system for the military while addressing the outstanding debts owed to suppliers.

During the meeting, it was disclosed that the former Akufo-Addo-Bawumia administration did not prioritize food provision for the armed forces, resulting in a considerable debt burden.

Reports indicate that from August 2023 to December 2024, the government accumulated an outstanding debt of around GH¢270 million to food suppliers. Dr. Boamah shared this information in a statement on his Facebook wall on Thursday, March 20, 2025.

Recognizing the urgency of the matter, Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson has committed to settling the current food supply bills while also working towards addressing the GH¢270 million arrears inherited from the previous administration. “We are committed to providing both short-term and medium-term solutions to this avoidable food supply crisis,” Dr. Omane Boamah stated. “The well-being of our soldiers cannot be compromised, and we will begin implementing solutions starting next week.”

The government's immediate focus is to ensure a consistent food supply for the armed forces while also developing a long-term strategy to prevent future shortages.
