Former Member of Parliament for Dome Kwabenya, Sarah Adwoa Safo, has revealed that the vote to remove Prof. Mike Ocquaye as Speaker of Parliament was so decisive that she cannot disclose the exact figures publicly.
Speaking in an interview on Movement Radio/TV, she emphasized that the rejection of Prof. Ocquaye was not the doing of just a handful of MPs but rather a large group who had consistently pushed for his replacement.
“They were not two or one, those who voted against him were more than that number,” she stated, highlighting the scale of opposition within Parliament.
According to her, many MPs had long expressed dissatisfaction with Ocquaye’s leadership and had actively lobbied for a change.
“They were always coming to us to tell us Nana to replace him,” she revealed, suggesting that his removal was planned well in advance.
She also hinted that the situation could have escalated into nationwide unrest had the full voting details been made public.
“If ballots had been counted on that day, Ghana would have turned upside down,” she remarked, alluding to the tension surrounding the Speaker’s election.
Addressing the controversial actions of Carlos Ahenkorah, who attempted to snatch ballot papers during the vote, Adwoa Safo defended his behavior, arguing that he was reacting to the unexpected scale of the opposition.
“The people who voted NO were not one or two. We had a national security minister. Why do you think that Hon. Carlos was gingered to go and destroy the ballots? Do you think there is something wrong with him?” she questioned.

From a brother MP of mine, he said it was 8 votes against Prof, that is why they asked Carlos to run away with the Ballot Box. The humiliation was too much, first opposition Speaker but Carlos decided to chew some Ballot papers instead.
