Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has called on President John Dramani Mahama to take decisive action against National Security raids targeting former heads of state institutions, urging him to leave a legacy of justice and restraint.
Speaking at a press conference on Thursday, March 20, 2025, Afenyo-Markin condemned what he described as intimidation and unwarranted attacks carried out under the pretense of national security operations.
His remarks follow a raid on the residence of former Bank of Ghana Governor, Dr. Ernest Addison, which took place in the early hours of Wednesday, March 19, 2025. The operation, led by Richard Jakpa, Director of Special Operations at the National Security Secretariat, was conducted by around 20 armed operatives.
The security personnel, some wearing balaclavas and armed with AK-47 rifles, reportedly stormed Dr. Addison’s Roman Ridge home in Accra while he was present. Reports indicate that upon entry, the operatives disabled the CCTV system before conducting a search of the premises.
In his plea to the President, Afenyo-Markin urged Mahama to take responsibility and put an end to what he described as an abuse of executive power.
“President John Dramani Mahama, please leave a legacy. Let it be said that even if there were excesses in the exercise of executive power when you had the opportunity, you changed it for good. Own that legacy in your name. We are tired of the intimidation, the attacks, and the hypocrisy,” he stated.
The Minority Leader further alleged that valuables, including cash and jewelry, were stolen during the raid on Dr. Addison’s residence, raising concerns about the conduct and motives behind such security operations.
