The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has commended the Ghana Police Service for the arrest and prosecution of a suspect in the murder of investigative journalist Ahmed Suale.

Ahmed Suale was shot three times—twice in the chest and once in the neck—by unidentified men on motorbikes on Wednesday, January 16, 2019, while sitting in his vehicle.

For years, the GJA, several organizations, and activists have demanded justice, urging the Ghana Police Service to bring the perpetrators to book.

However, reports on Monday, March 17, revealed the arrest of a suspect, Daniel Owusu Koranteng, also known as Akwasi Amakye.

The suspect, a former colleague of the late journalist at Tiger Eye Private Investigations, is alleged to have leaked Suale’s photos to a politician before the tragic incident.

Following the murder, Amakye fled to the UK but recently returned to Ghana, leading to his arrest at a salon in Amasaman-Adease in the Greater Accra Region.

He has now been remanded by the Madina District Court and is set to reappear on April 1, 2025.

Reacting to the development in a statement dated March 20, the GJA stated, “We particularly commend highly the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Christian Tetteh Yohuno and the Director-General of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID), DCOP Lydia Yaako Donkor, for this giant step towards unraveling the barbaric murder of the investigative journalist.”

The statement added, “We hope this major breakthrough in the arrest and prosecution of suspect Daniel Owusu Koranteng will only be the beginning of the long search for justice for Ahmed Suale and relief for media freedom advocates in Ghana and abroad, who have remained shocked by his murder.”
