Okatakyie Afrifa released from NIB detention

Ghanaian broadcaster Okatakyie Afrifa Mensah was freed after his arrest by security personnel caused a great deal of indignation among followers and opposition leaders.

The opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) and media freedom supporters strongly condemned the host of the well-known social media program “FOR THE RECORDS” for being picked up under suspicious circumstances on Wednesday, March 19.

General Secretary Justin Frimpong Kodua demanded his immediate release, calling the detention an assault on press freedom and democracy.

“The arrest of Okatakyie Afrifa Mensah by the NDC government is a dangerous attack on democracy and freedom of speech! Ghana must not descend into tyranny,” Kodua had stated.

Alexander Afenyo-Markin, Effutu MP and minority leader, also offered his thoughts, urging tolerance and cautioning against intimidating government critics.

“It started with Abronye. Now it’s Okatakyie Afrifa. The NDC government must be tolerant. Using State Security to intimidate opponents is not good for our democracy!” he noted.

Afrifa Mensah has now been released after a great deal of public pressure and social media campaigns demanding his release.
