Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Abdulai Jinapor, has unveiled an ambitious initiative aimed at transforming a substantial number of traditional fuel stations across the country into state-of-the-art electric vehicle (EV) charging centers.

This strategic shift, as articulated by the minister, is a crucial component of the government’s overarching plan to accelerate Ghana's transition towards sustainable energy solutions and to significantly diminish the nation’s reliance on fossil fuels.

During his remarks at an energy policy forum held on Wednesday, March 19, Jinapor elaborated on the government’s forward-looking vision for the future of transportation in Ghana. He emphasized the urgent need for the country to adapt to the inevitable rise of electric vehicles, asserting that preparations must begin promptly to embrace this transformative change.

Jinapor projected that Ghanaian roads are on the verge of experiencing a notable surge in the adoption of electric cars, with a profound transformation anticipated within the next decade. He pointed to the swift advancements in electric vehicle technology, highlighting that innovations in battery efficiency and charging infrastructure have led to remarkable reductions in charging times and improvements in vehicle performance. This, he noted, positions Ghana to integrate EVs into its transportation ecosystem effectively, paving the way for a cleaner, greener future.

“What we are going to do is to convert most of our filling stations and take some space and put in place charging stations. And today with technology, in just five minutes to 10 minutes, you can charge your car and continue to move.

“We are also going to deploy BYD, the Chinese company to come up with a new technology. That new technology, in five minutes, your car is fully charged,” he stated.
