Minister of Labour, Jobs and Employment Abdul-Rashid Pelpuo has assured that under his leadership, Ghanaian workers abroad will not face punishment or exploitation for carrying out their duties.
Speaking at the launch of the 'Work Abroad Programme' in Accra on Tuesday, March 18, the minister emphasized the government’s commitment to ensuring fair and ethical labor migration.
“In my period as a minister, we will not tolerate any situation where Ghanaian workers will go abroad and working and be punished for doing their work,” he stated.
According to the minister, the programme will also help reduce youth unemployment and curb irregular migration.
He assured that bilateral agreements would be signed with destination countries and recruiting companies to safeguard the welfare of Ghanaian migrant workers.
“For all companies that are taking the Ghanaian worker outside this country, we’ll have to first of all sign an agreement with the country they are going to and with the company doing it. We will ensure that the migrant workers who are taken out are properly taken care of,” he explained.
Dr. Pelpuo further highlighted that the initiative would enhance Ghana’s economic resilience by maximizing the benefits of remittances sent by Ghanaian workers abroad.
“Furthermore, this initiative will play a critical role in curbing irregular migration, ensuring fair and transparent recruitment practices, and eliminating exploitation,” he said.
The 'Work Abroad Programme', he noted, would also provide training for selected candidates before they leave Ghana to meet international employability standards.
The 'Work Abroad Programme' is an initiative aimed at creating structured and legal pathways for Ghanaian job seekers to secure employment opportunities overseas.
