Henry Osei Akoto, a leading member of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), has criticized the immediate past Inspector General of Police (IGP) Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, questioning his handling of high-profile murder cases.
He specifically challenged what the former IGP achieved in his three and a half years in office, referencing the recent arrest of a suspect in connection with the 2019 murder of investigative journalist Ahmed Suale.
“Dampare was sacked, and in just 3 days, a suspect has been arrested in the Ahmed Suale murder case. What was Dampare doing for 3 and a half years?” he asked in a social media post.
Reports on Monday, March 17, revealed the arrest of a suspect, Daniel Owusu Koranteng, also known as Akwasi Amakye.
The suspect, a former colleague of the late journalist at Tiger Eye Private Investigations, is alleged to have leaked Suale’s photos to a politician leading to his tragic death.
Following the murder, Amakye allegedly fled to the UK but recently returned to Ghana, leading to his arrest at a salon in Amasaman-Adease in the Greater Accra Region.
Ahmed Suale was shot three times—twice in the chest and once in the neck—by unidentified men on motorbikes on Wednesday, January 16, 2019, while sitting in his vehicle.
For years, several organizations and activists have demanded justice, urging the Ghana Police Service to bring the perpetrators to book.
