Galamsey: NDC criminals have taken over from NPP criminals, some are doing partnership – Ken Ashigbey alleges

Dr. Kenneth Ashigbey, the Convener of the Media Coalition Against Illegal Mining, has voiced his deep concern about the ongoing operations of illegal miners, despite the progress made in combating this issue.

In an interview with JoyNews, Dr. Ashigbey noted that unlawful mining activities continue, particularly within forest reserves and near water bodies, in spite of the efforts made by the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources to address the problem.

“Some work is happening, but unfortunately, the criminals are still at work. The criminal transition we saw in 2016 and 2017 has happened again. Now, not only are NDC criminals taking over from NPP criminals, but even some NPP criminals are partnering with them. They provide the equipment and manpower while hiding behind political figures,” he revealed.

Dr. Ashigbey pointed out that members of both major political parties are significantly involved in the galamsey activities, highlighting the troubling influence of politically exposed individuals. He also raised concerns about the involvement of foreigners, particularly individuals from China, in these illegal mining operations.

He cautioned that the threat posed by these activities extends beyond environmental degradation to national security. “These people have sophisticated weapons and ammunition. Many of them are from neighbouring countries, and they are now providing security for galamsey operators. If we look at what happened in Liberia, Sierra Leone, and with Boko Haram, we must understand the danger we are facing,” he warned.

Stressing the urgency of the situation, Dr. Ashigbey stated that the nation cannot afford to let political interests compromise its security and environment. He called for immediate action to dismantle the criminal networks facilitating illegal mining.
