In a significant breakthrough in the murder investigation of investigative journalist Ahmed Suale, the Ghana Police Service has arrested a key suspect believed to have played a role in his killing.
The suspect, a close associate of the late journalist, is alleged to have leaked Suale’s photographs to a prominent politician in Ghana before his assassination, myjoyonline.com reports.
Before his murder, both Suale and the suspect worked together at Tiger Eye Private Investigations. However, the suspect was later dismissed from the organization. Following Suale’s death, the suspect, identified as Daniel Owusu Koranteng, also known as Akwasi Amakye, fled the country, reportedly disguising himself to evade arrest.
Recent developments in the case have been linked to intelligence gathered by the FBI in the United States. Investigators analyzed phone records extracted from Suale’s mobile devices, which were sent to the U.S. as part of the probe. The records revealed critical communications between the deceased and the suspect in the days leading up to the murder.
A source within the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) disclosed that Amakye had been under police radar for years. He reportedly relocated to the UK when authorities intensified their search. However, last week, he secretly returned to Ghana, leading to his arrest at a hair-plaiting salon in Amasaman-Adease.
Despite the arrest, tensions are rising within the police service, as reports suggest that a high-ranking officer is attempting to interfere in the investigation. The officer is allegedly pushing for the suspect to be granted police inquiry bail rather than being immediately processed for court. This development has reportedly created unrest within the police headquarters.
Suale was shot dead near his family home in Madina on January 16, 2019, by unidentified gunmen after collaborating with the BBC on an investigative report.
