Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the Overlord of the Ashanti Kingdom, has weighed in on discussions regarding the review of the Free Senior High School (SHS) policy.

The Asantehene said there is no need to continue the policy if students are left to endure hunger and face accommodation challenges.

Speaking at the Manhyia Palace during a courtesy visit by Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu, he suggested a possible review to allow parents who can afford it to pay fees for their wards.

“If students will go to school under the Free SHS policy but won’t be fed due to food shortages, face accommodation challenges, and vacate after only a few days in school, then it would be better to cancel the policy. Or it can be reviewed for those who can afford to pay for it,” he stated.

The Free SHS policy was introduced in 2017 to remove financial barriers that prevented many Ghanaian students from accessing secondary education.

Before its implementation, students and their families bore the costs of tuition, textbooks, feeding, and other fees, making secondary education expensive for many.

Despite its benefits, concerns have been raised about challenges such as feeding and accommodation, which often force schools to vacate early.
