The Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has assured students of Labone Senior High School of the government’s urgent intervention following a fierce fire that swept through three girls’ dormitories on Sunday.
The incident occurred while students were attending their afternoon prep, affecting three out of six dormitories. One dormitory was completely destroyed, while two others suffered partial damage.
During a visit to the school on Monday, March 17, the Minister assured the students that the government would promptly restore the damaged dormitories.
He further noted that plans would be made to build a new girls’ dormitory to replace the one that was destroyed.
“The first news item I read. So, in consultation with our chief director, we decided that our first official activity and engagement would be to respond to you, empathize with you, and give you assurances that the government will urgently and expeditiously come to your aid and support,” the Minister said.
He added, “We know how stressful and distressing this can be for you. I’ve asked a team to move in quickly, make an assessment, and the government will do what is necessary and appropriate.
“So be assured that in a matter of days, some intervention will come to facilitate the repair of the girls’ dormitory. I am here to consult with the Headmistress to see whether, if there is available land, we can, subject to budget approval, construct a new girls’ dormitory.”
