The presentation of the maiden budget of H.E. President John Dramani Mahama by the Finance Minister, Hon. Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, is inspiring and has come with appreciable sigh of relief, as government through its economic policies demonstrated financial commitment to honor major campaign promises of the great NDC during the 2024 electioneering period.

Chief among them include, the abolishment of popular obnoxious taxes such as E levy, betting tax, emission levy, pragmatic measures to implement the transformational 24 Hour Economy to create jobs, and financial awards to the Women’s Development Bank, the Big Push, National Apprenticeship Programme, among others.

Fast forward, the allocation of Gh100million to pay monthly allowances to Assembly members and the instantaneous singing of 2024 campaign songs of the NDC by Members of Parliament on the majority side, is a testament of the unique nature of the pledge and President Mahama’s well-deserved commendation for fulfilling it.

The advocacy by past and present Assembly members to be paid monthly allowances, the back and forth of it under successive governments since the inception of the 4th Republic, and counter rejection of the policy by the NPP in the run-up to the 2020 and 2024 elections, makes President Mahama and the NDC worthy of celebration for this step, especially when it was the NDC that also first introduced the distribution of motorbikes to Assembly members in 2011.

I seize this medium to call on all Assembly members nationwide to be more proactive and responsive on their mandate, as this upcoming privilege did not avail itself to their predecessors since 1992. In furtherance, I call on all, in spite of their political leanings, to pray and wish the NDC government well, as this is indicative of President Mahama’s government’s fidelity to its 2024 campaign promises.
