Dear critical reader, if we allow Ghana's politicians to continue pussyfooting around what is an existential threat to the well-being of our people and unborn generations, we are doomed as a nation. All surface gold mining, both legal and illegal, must be banned for two years to enable a transition to an underground only industry.
Aren't there identified rich seams of gold nationwide to anchor that on? The plain truth is that galamsey operators neither care a whit about the apocalyptic impacts on the natural environment and humans, nor about Ghana's long-term future – which is why we must see this as an undeclared war by criminal types who are potential warlords who could destabilise our country one day, oooo, Ghanafuor.
If we did a little bit of first principles lateral-thinking, as a wise and aspirational African people, couldn't we almost immediately replace lost galamsey jobs - resulting from such a moratorium, with new jobs - such as tree seedling nurseries, for example - in which micro-entrepreneurship thrives in the world's biggest tree-planting landscaping and land regeneration levelling-up initiative, Ghanafuor? Haaba.
There is no more time to be wasted. Enough is enough. We must impose a two-year ban on all surface gold mining now. Full stop. Yooooooooo. A word to the wise…
