Protecting Atewa's Riches: Commendations for the Eastern Regional Forestry Task Force

Feature Article Protecting Atewas Riches: Commendations for the Eastern Regional Forestry Task Force
WED, 12 MAR 2025

Today's swoop by the Eastern Regional Forestry Task Force, led by the indefatigable Miss Ivy Agyemang of Kyebi Forest District, resulting in the arrest of five illegal gold miners on our P. E. Thompson Estate's family's freehold 14-square-mile upland evergreen rainforest ancestral land in the Akyem Juaso section of the Atewa Range, is a testament to the unwavering dedication of our law enforcement agencies. Such operations not only safeguard the natural environment but also preserve the cultural heritage of cocoa-farming fringe-forest communities.

The Atewa Range, part of a designated Globally Significant Biodiversity Area (GSBA), is a treasure trove of ecological wonders [1]. Its upland evergreen rainforests, home to a myriad of endemic species, are a natural asset that requires vigilant protection. The wanton destruction caused by galamsay activities poses an existential threat to this delicate ecosystem.

The Eastern Regional Forestry Task Force's efforts demonstrate a resolute commitment to combating the scourge of illegal mining. Their tireless work has sent a strong message to perpetrators that their actions will no longer be tolerated.

We particularly commend Miss Ivy Agyemang, whose leadership and dedication have been instrumental in this success. She is an inspiration to young girls across Ghana, demonstrating that women can excel in roles that demand courage, resilience, and determination.

As we applaud the Task Force's success, we must also recognize the broader implications of their work. The preservation of Atewa's biodiversity is not merely a local concern but a global imperative. As we strive to mitigate the effects of climate change, protect water sources, and ensure ecological balance, the conservation of areas like Atewa becomes ever more critical.

To the Eastern Regional Forestry Task Force, we extend our deepest gratitude for your unwavering dedication to protecting our environment and cultural heritage. Your selfless service is a beacon of hope in the fight against the destructive forces of galamsay.
