Komenda Sugar Factory to create 7,500 jobs under 24-Hour Economy Policy — Elizabeth Ofosu Adjare

Minister for Trade, Industry, and Agribusiness, Madam Elizabeth Ofosu Adjare, has reaffirmed the government's commitment to reviving the Komenda Sugar Factory.

During her visit to Komenda Edina Eguafo Abirem on Wednesday, February 26, 2025, she assessed the facility’s condition and gathered crucial information to ensure its return to full operation.

Addressing the media, Madam Adjare assured the community of the government's determination to restore sugar production at the factory.

She emphasized that the factory would be integrated into the 24-hour economy system to create employment opportunities for the youth.

"The Komenda Sugar Factory will start working soon. Raw materials will be made available under the 'Feed The Industry' project for farmers. Funding will be available for it to start production to reduce the importing of sugar into this country. Komenda Sugar Factory will be under the 24-hour Economy factories," she stated.

Member of Parliament for Komenda Edina Eguafo Abirem, Hon. Samuel Atta Mills, pledged his support for the minister’s efforts, assuring that the factory’s revival would provide much-needed jobs for locals.

"It's good the minister is here to see the situation of the factory. People have pledged to give us the lands for us to do the job. What is sad is all our kids are outside. Either they are in Takoradi or Accra or even outside the country looking for jobs while we have a factory over here that can give us at least 7,500 jobs. Why are we not operationalizing this? I understand now. We built it, and we are going to make sure it works again," he said.

Central Regional Minister, Ekow Panyin, also pledged to collaborate with sugarcane farmers, ensuring they receive high-yielding sugarcane varieties to support the factory’s operations.

The visit has renewed optimism among residents, who have long awaited the revival of the factory, which has remained inactive since its construction.
