Dr. Hanna Louisa Bisiw, the newly appointed Administrator of the Minerals Development Fund (MDF), has vowed to lead a transformational agenda to ensure that Ghana’s mining communities fully benefit from the country’s mineral wealth.

She officially assumed office on Monday, 17th, following her appointment by President John Dramani Mahama. During the handing-over ceremony, she reaffirmed her commitment to fulfilling the fund’s mandate of improving the lives of people in mining communities.

The Minerals Development Fund was established in 2016 during President Mahama’s first term to channel financial resources directly into mining communities. The fund supports traditional and local government authorities within mining areas, as well as institutions responsible for the sector’s development. Dr. Bisiw acknowledged the challenges faced by these communities, emphasizing that while they sit on vast mineral resources, they continue to struggle with underdevelopment. She noted that her appointment reflects the president’s confidence in her leadership and commitment to making a meaningful impact.

She outlined a plan to assess the fund’s assets and liabilities, stressing the importance of ensuring that its resources are managed efficiently and put to productive use. According to her, the fund was created as an asset rather than a liability, and it must fulfill that purpose. She also emphasized the need for a collaborative and inclusive leadership approach, stating that she would engage with staff members to understand the fund’s existing projects and determine the best way forward.

Dr. Norris Hamma, the outgoing Administrator of MDF, officially handed over to Dr. Bisiw, highlighting key achievements under his tenure. He noted that the MDF has significantly impacted mining communities by establishing 22 Local Management Committees and spearheading various development projects, including the construction of school blocks, CHPS compounds, AstroTurf facilities, mechanized boreholes, and alternative livelihood programs.

Expressing confidence in Dr. Bisiw’s ability to lead the fund effectively, Dr. Hamma cited her extensive leadership experience and grassroots mobilization skills, particularly as the National Women’s Organizer for the National Democratic Congress (NDC). He believes that her strong connection with women and children in mining communities will help ensure they receive the necessary support and opportunities.

He also extended his gratitude to the management and staff for their dedication and urged them to offer the same support to Dr. Bisiw to ensure the continued success of the fund.
