A strong security presence at the Ashanti Region's Council of State re-election created dramatic scenes as several prominent political figures were turned away by police for lacking accreditation.
Former Education Minister Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, former Bantama MP Henry Kwabena Kokofu, Kwadaso MP Kingsley Nyarko, and former Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong were among those barred from entering the main auditorium, where the voting was taking place.
Police at the venue stood firm, allowing only accredited individuals—specifically assembly members eligible to vote—to enter. The barred political figures complied with the directive and left without incident, as reported by Citi FM’s Ashanti Regional Correspondent Hafiz Tijani.
Security remained tight at the venue, with barriers set up and a water cannon on standby, signaling the police’s readiness to maintain order. Earlier, police had arrested one individual after chaos broke out at the site.
Saaka Abuba Wins North East Region's Council of State Election
Meanwhile, Saaka Abuba emerged victorious in the North East Region's Council of State election after a closely contested rerun on Monday, February 17, 2025. Abuba secured 7 out of 12 votes, defeating his closest rival, Asabigi San Malunga, who received 5 votes.
The rerun followed a tie in the initial election, where both Abuba and Malunga received 6 votes each. This tie prompted the Electoral Commission to organize a second round to determine a clear winner.
The voting session, held under strict security and adherence to electoral guidelines, was smooth and transparent.
Additionally, a re-run was also held in the Ashanti Region after the first election was disrupted, leaving no clear winner.
