Police in the Ashanti Region have arrested one person following disturbances during the re-run of the Council of State election.
The election, which had been rescheduled due to earlier disruptions, once again descended into chaos when a group of unidentified individuals stormed the venue during the sorting and counting of ballots.
Eyewitnesses reported that the intruders forcefully entered the premises, overturning tables, damaging ballot boxes, and scattering voting materials. As a result, the Electoral Commission (EC) was forced to suspend proceedings.
The violence is believed to have been sparked by dissatisfaction over the unexpected defeat of Yaw Owusu Obimpeh, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate, who was considered a strong contender. Some aggrieved supporters reportedly demanded a review of the results, leading to the disruption.
Meanwhile, several political figures, including former Education Minister Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, Kingsley Nyarko, and Henry Kwabena Kokofu, were denied entry to the voting center for lacking accreditation.
In response to the incident, security at the venue has been reinforced to prevent further disturbances.
